Fernando Abucham

Fernando is a partner of Copa Investimentos, an independent timberland investment management firm in Brazil. Copa Investimentos was established in March 2012 through the spin-off of the timberland investments group from Claritas Investimentos.

Prior to forming Copa Investimentos, Fernando was a partner and co-head of Claritas’ timberland investments group. In this role, between 2006 and 2012, Fernando participated in the structuring and management of the first two timber funds raised in Brazil as well as of their four forestry portfolio companies. Previously, Fernando worked for Goldman, Sachs & Co.’s investment banking division, in New York and Sao Paulo, involved with M&A, Corporate Finance and Principal Investments in Latin America.  Fernando holds a JD from Pontifícia Universidade Católica Law School in Sao Paulo, Brazil.


Henrique Rodrigues Alves Aretz
Portfolio Manager - VBI Timberland, Brazil

Mr. Aretz is currently a Managing Partner and the Portfolio Manager of VBI Timberland, a joint-venture with a 
major international pension fund, managing timberland and agricultural portfolios on behalf of international investors. 
Prior to that, he was the Chief Investment Officer at Brazil Timber, being responsible for the deployment of the largest portfolio of timberland investments in Brazil to date. 
Additionally, he developed an extensive international experience in the financial markets, at Goldman Sachs (Switzerland/UK) and Lehman Brothers (UK/USA) ), concentrating in Mergers & Acquisitions for the Natural Resources industry, and also worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company (Brazil), again with 
a special focus on the Natural Resources/Basic Materials sectors.
Mr. Aretz holds a degree with honors in Business from Fundação Getúlio Vargas - FGV in Brazil and an MBA from London Business Schoolboth with a concentration in Finance.


Keith Balter

Director of Economic Research, is responsible for the market analysis supporting investment and operational planning and decision making for the Hancock Natural Resource Group (HNRG). Keith’s team is responsible for a series of analytical publications that address trends in global timber markets and the role of timberlands in institutional investment.   Before joining HNRG in 2012, Keith was Senior Economist with Forest Capital Partners LLC, a company investing and managing commercial timberland for institutional investors, where he was responsible for, market analysis, business development and investor support.  Prior to his time at Forest Capital Partners, Keith was a principal at RISI, a key provider of information services and analysis to the global forest products sector.

Andre Luiz Campos De Andrade

Michael P. Cerchiaro

Mike joined Forest Investment Associates in 2004 and is currently Vice President, Director of International Investments and Operations.  Mike is a member of FIA’s Executive and Investment Committees and is charged with expanding the firm’s capabilities into non-U.S. timberland markets. 

Formerly, he started up and was the Manager of Broad Arrow Timber Company, a subsidiary company charged with the logging and delivery of 1.6 million tons of timber products on an annual basis to various facilities in the U.S. South.  He also served as a Regional Investment Forester responsible for timber and alternative land use management on approximately 245,000 acres in the U.S. states of Georgia and Florida.  Before joining FIA, he was employed by Rayonier Inc. in Fernandina Beach, Florida as a Research Forester. 

Mike holds a B.S. and M.S. in Forestry from Virginia Tech and an M.B.A. with a finance concentration from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University.  He is a member of the Virginia Tech Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation Advisory Board and serves on the Board of the Robinson Council of Young Business Leaders.

Phil Cottle

Phil Cottle is the Managing Director and founder of ForestRe Ltd., established to protect financial investment into forestry world-wide. 
He has been a specialist for 20 years in quantifying natural hazard risks of fire, wind and snow/ice each of which may cause a catastrophic loss to forest enterprises.
He has been responsible for planning and execution of national forestry and tree crop insurance schemes for Spain, Portugal, Indonesia, Canada, USA, France, South Africa and New Zealand.

Elizabeth de Carvalhaes has just been appointed as CEO of the Brazilian Tree Industry (Iba), after spearheading Bracelpa, the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association, for over six years. Ibá is the result of combining the Brazilian Association of the Wood Panels Industry (Abipa), the Brazilian Association of the Manufactures of Laminate Flooring (Abiplar), the Brazilian Association of Forest Plantation Producers (Abraf) and Bracelpa into one single association.

Bob Flynn

Prior to joining RISI in April 2006, he worked 18 years as a consultant with several firms including Jay Gruenfeld Associates and Wood Resources International, assisting clients in
understanding trends in forest resources, forest ownership, and industrial development in Southern Hemisphere plantation forest countries, China,  and elsewhere. 
In addition, Mr. Flynn worked 11 years as a forester, primarily for Champion International in Oregon.

Steve Gretzinger is IFC's Senior Forestry Specialist based in Nicaragua who has provided technical support to investment clients in the forestry and wood products sectors in 10 countries. With 30 years of sector experience, he has managed private forestry operations in the Amazon, evaluated timber investments, assisted manufacturers to build wood procurement strategies, and logged and exported wood products with his own company. Steve understands the operational complexities of running a business under difficult conditions, having lived and worked in Guatemala, Peru, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. His current client focus is on biomass-cogeneration projects based on plantations in Central America, strengthening the financial and production controls of industrial forest concessionaires in Brazil and Peru, and improving community outsourcing programs for the pulp & paper industry in Asia. Saulo Guerra is a Forest Engineer and holds a PhD. in Energy in Agriculture. He has been researching new concepts and innovation on mechanization of energy crops such as eucalyptus, bamboo, and sugarcane. He has done more than 20 scientific presentations on both national and international meetings regarding this theme and has published more than 10 peer reviewed articles.
He is one of the coordinators of the research group NEMPA - FCA/UNESP. He is an Invited Specialist at the Sao Paulo State Energy Secretariat and collaborated with the Sao Paulo State Energy Plan - 2020. He is also a member of the FAPESP bioenergy program - BIOEN. At a national level, he is author of a chapter in “BIOENERGY” book (Unesp Publishing House, 2012). At an international level, was the only Brazilian member at COST Action, research group sponsored by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology and by the IEA Bioenergy, organization where he participates as a member of the Forest Energy research group since 2009. 

Currently, the NEMPA research group, under Dr. Guerra’s coordination, leads three pioneer projects:  the eucalyptus biomass harvester project in partnership with New Holland Company, the trees residue baler – BioBaler in partnership with Anderson Group and Siltomac Company.

Dennis Neilson

Dennis has had previous experience as a WoodSupply and Export Marketing Manager for Fletcher Forests; and as a Manager and Director of a JV New Zealand-Japanese woodchip export company. 
He has been a Director of a eucalyptus plantation- owning company. For several years now, Dennis has beena
c c o-author of the annual multi-client report entitled, "The International Pulpwood Resource and Trade Review",

J. Harald Örneberg was born in Sweden in 1963. He has an extensive experience in the forest industry, as he has managed forest assets in Sweden for the past 20 years.His passion for forestry led

Seth Palmer

Seth is an Associate Director for the MetLife Timberland Finance Group.  He has over 18 years of timberland management, investment and financial experience in the forest industry.  He currently oversees business development and accounts for MetLife’s timberland investments in the southern U.S. and Brazil.  He joined MetLife in 2007 as the senior analyst for the Timberland Finance Group.  Prior to joining MetLife, Seth was a forester for Sierra Pacific Industries where he was responsible for regional forest operations and planning.  Seth is a CA Registered Professional Forester and honorably served in the United States Navy.  He earned an AAS in Forestry Technology from Hocking College, Ohio; a BS in Forest Management from Oregon State University; and a MBA from California State University, Chico.


Alvaro Perez Del Castillo

Alvaro is a Director of the Uruguayan based forest consulting company, Pike Consultora Forestal Pike & co. (www.pike.com.uy) and the climate change consulting company, Carbosur (www.carbosur.com.uy). Alvaro has had previous experience working for the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay, in the Forest Products division as an expert in wood drying and other areas. He spent three months working in Japan as a JICA expert.

For several years now, Alvaro has been working and supervising tens of consulting assignments to forest companies of Uruguay and other countries working for Pike&Co. During the last six years, he has supervised the assessment of potential land purchases for various clients for a total of 80,000 ha. He has also supervised the inventory of more than 70,000 ha of forests during the last three years. He is in charge of compiling and maintaining Pike Consultora Forestal’s Forest Information System, the most complete set of geographic and database information about forests in Uruguay and East/Northeast Argentina.

As Carbosur’s Executive Director, Alvaro helped in the development of the first approved consolidated methodology for AR (Afforestation/Reforestation) projects worldwide; he has prepared eight projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and six AR-projects in Uruguay (one registered under the CDM and five in the VCS [Voluntary Carbon Standard]).

Alvaro is one of the three organizers of the Seven International Woodfibre Resource and Trade Conference to be will be held in Chile in November 3 - 4 2014. (Field trip 5-7 November).

Kirk Robinson

Kirk Robinson is a Partner at Brookfield Financial’s office in Brazil. Kirk has 13 years of international experience in investment banking, M&A, funds management, and financing of public and private infrastructure businesses. Kirk has recently led several forestry sales transactions in Brazil.

Silvio Teixeira

Silvio is the CEO of Brookfield Brazil Timber, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Brookfield Brazil Timber is dedicated to identifying, acquiring and operating Brazilian timberland investments; and since 2008 has grown timberlands under management in Brazil to over 300,000 hectares. Silvio has over 25 years of agricultural sector experience. Prior to joining Brookfield, he was General Manager of Cotecna, responsible for the Brazilian operations of the company, and previously Managing Partner, GT Associados and Brazil Retail Bank Director – Trading Director, Rabobank International Do Brazil. Anders Tosterud

Anders Tosterud has 30 years of experience in forest and forest industry development, mostly in tropical and sub-tropical countries, mainly in planning and establishment of eucalyptus plantations as a fibrebase for the forest industry. Mr Tosterud has worked in Brazil for around 20 years and has participated in key positions in some of the most successful forest industry development  projects, such as Veracel, Copener (Bahia Pulp) and StoraEnso’s operations in Brazil and Uruguay. He has also worked as a project manager of Poyry with many of the most important forest industry companies in Latin America, including Klabin, Fibria, Rigesa, Champion, Duratex, Jari and Aracruz. Also for Poyry, Mr Tosterud has been responsible for forest industry projects in the US, Canada, Mozambique and Vietnam. In Sweden, he was R&D manager for The Forest Research Institute. Mr Tosterud holds a Master’s of Forestry from The Royal College of Forestry, Stockholm and a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.


Marco Tuoto
Director of Tree Florestal , Brazil

Over 20 years of experience in the forest sector. During his career, Marco Tuoto has acquired all-embracing experience on the timber value chain, from plantation establishment, forest management and wood procurement to forest-based industry and marketing.
Currently, he is board member of TREE Florestal S.A. and CEO of TREE Management & Trading Co. Prior to that, Marco Tuoto was Managing Director of EBFLORA and Director Operations and senior consultant of STCP Engenharia de Projetos. In addition, he worked for INDUFOR Oy in Finland.
He led assignments in Brazil and abroad (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Congo, Ecuador, Finland, Peru, Uruguay, USA, among others), involving business strategies, investment planning, market assessments and M&A processes for forest-based industries, institutional investors, TIMOS and international organizations (FAO, ITTO, IADB, World Bank and others). He has large experience dealing with foreign direct investors and performing economic analysis to support forest investment decisions. He has expertise in due diligence of timberland acquisitions. He was in charge of several timberland acquisitions in Brazil (more than 300 thousand ha of land acquired for the establishment of forest plantations).
Marco Tuoto holds a BSc in Forestry and a MSc in Forest Economics and Policy.


Germano Vieira

Mr. Germano Vieira holds a degree in Forestry from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, with postgraduate studies in Engineering Work Safety PUC/iCMG – Catholic Institute of Minas Gerais and an Executive MBA from Fundação Getúlio Vargas.
He has over 30 years of experience as a manager of large projects in forestry companies, such as CAF Santa Barbara Ltda., and Japanese–Brazilian Pulp SA – CENIBRA MASISA and Brazil.
Mr. Vieira currently holds the position of Director of Forestry in Eldorado Brasil Celulose S.A.


Oliver Williams IV
CFA, President, USA

Oliver Williams directs the institutional farmland investment program and serves on the Investment Committee of the Hancock Natural Resource Group (HNRG). Previously, Mr. Williams coordinated asset management activities and was part of the senior management team. Prior to joining HAIG in 1997, he spent 5 years with the First Pioneer Farm Credit, ACA, one of the largest farm credit associations in the country. At Farm Credit, he was responsible for evaluating and appraising farmland and farm businesses for potential loans. He also managed a farm loan portfolio, which included both row and permanent cropland. He is a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, the CFA Institute and the Boston Security Analysts Society. Oliver  is a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds a BS in Agricultural Economics, with a concentration in finance, from Cornell University. Mr. Williams grew up on a poultry and grain farm in western New York.
